A response to the Pittsburgh Tragedy

A response to the Pittsburgh Tragedy We are heartbroken by the tragic and senseless violence that unfolded this past Shabbat morning at the Tree of Life (L’Simcha) Synagogue in Pittsburgh, PA. To the Jewish community of Pittsburgh, we are grieving with you. We know your community will come together to honor those who lost their lives and suffered injuries. When I saw the name of the Congregation it brought to mind a prayer from the Union Prayer Book on returning the Torah to the Ark on Rosh Hashanah morning; “It is a tree of life to them who hold fast to it. Its ways are ways of pleasantness and all its paths are peace. Turn Thou us unto Thee, O Lord, and we shall be restored; renew our days of old.” As a genealogist, when I thought further about the name of the Congregation, Tree of Life (L'Simcah) Synagogue. Building my family tree and learning my family’s history, I understand and more fully appreciate my heritage. It is most certainly my Tree of Life.

Iveta Blahútová is a Genealogy Research Analyst at the Midwest Genealogy Center (MGC) in Independence, Missouri.  She has been interested in genealogy for many years. Her focus since high school years has always been history, social studies, law, history of law, old manuscript, languages, and lately etymology.

JGSGKC has so much to tell you!
We thought this image was perfect.
The JGSGKC was unanimously approved as a full, voting member of #IAJGS. So much has been accomplished in a short time, and there's so much more to do.

  • JGSGKC is a charitable organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
  • JGSGKC is registered with the State of Kansas as a not-for-profit corporation.
  • Richard Rosenstock is the JGSGKC Treasurer
  • A website is under construction, WebMaster: Richard Rosenstock
  • The blogsite is up and running
  • We have more than 20 paid members (and growing daily)

Be sure to mark your calendars!  The following programs are planned:
  • 16 April, Stephen Cohen – Introduction to Jewish Genealogy. He is a skilled genealogist and he is multi-talented ... Yiddish, calligraphy, chemistry, author. He also is on the Board of the Midwest Jewish Studies Association.
  •  2 May, Israel Pickholtz – Two presentations about DNA studies and interpretations. Israel has given many presentations and has published several articles in Avotaynu, the journal of Jewish genealogy.
  •  7 October, Janette Silverman – Two presentations. Subjects to be determined. Janette is the Coordinator of JewishGen’s Ukraine Special Interest Group.
Oh...and the Board is Changing.
The interim board members were dedicated to getting this society off the ground and flying.  I think we've done that.  JGSGKC is always looking for volunteers and members wanting to work with the board.  Here is the contact information of the active board members now, and more will be named shortly:

Welcome to the JGS of Greater Kansas City

Welcome to the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Kansas City (JGSGKC)

Our goal is to help you research your Jewish ancestors and ancestral homes. We will help you learn about current methods, technologies, and resources that can help you find records, disseminate your research and preserve your Jewish family histories.

We are all volunteers, governed by a Board of Directors according to a set of published Bylaws. The IRS has granted us 501(c)(3) status as a nonprofit charitable organization, so donations to us are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. We soon will be a member of the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies (IAJGS)

We hold monthly program meetings (except for July and August) and monthly Board meetings. We provide help to all levels of researchers, from beginning to advanced. You don’t have to be Jewish to join with us. We are open to all researchers who have an interest in Jewish genealogy and who support our goals.

Our Facebook page is at https://goo.gl/VVn46p; Or, go to Facebook.com and type Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Kansas City. Our blogsite is at https://jgsgkc.blogspot.com/. We post announcements on both. Both sites also have links to PayPal where you can fill out a Membership application and pay membership dues.

Annual membership dues are $25 for individuals, $35 for a household (more than one member), $50 for sustaining members, and $10 for student members under age 25. Complimentary memberships are available if the dues impose a financial burden. Attendance at our monthly program meetings is free to members in good standing. Non-member guests always are welcome, but we ask for a $5 donation at the door to help defray costs. All dues and donations help us pay for our website, library books, outside speakers, and other administrative expenses.

Membership dues and donations may be paid by check, cash, credit card, or PayPal. PayPal also accepts credit cards. Links on our blogsite and Facebook page take you to our Membership Application which has a direct connection to PayPal. We ask all new members to complete the Membership Application. When our website becomes operational we will have similar facilities on it.
If you have any questions, please contact  Richard Rosenstock (Richard@Rosenstock.net). We hope you will join us as we bring Jewish genealogy back to the Greater Kansas City area.
